Hey my lovely peeps….
So it’s been a little over a month since I’ve updated you on what’s been going on in my world. Well not much of anything but distractions if I’m to be honest. I got caught up in some personal stuff that took me away from my writing life. But in this time I have figured out exactly what I want to pursue with my writing. Meaning I now have a clarity that I didn’t possess a year ago.
I had decided two years ago, give or take, that I wanted to pursue writing in the mystery genre, specifically, paranormal mysteries. The idea of writing a mystery scared me because I’d never done it so I kept putting off even trying thinking that I needed to take mystery writing classes or read mystery writing books as well as more mystery novels. I did all that…and kept doing all that without even attempting to plot out my first mystery. ha!
Fast forward to March 2016 and I started plotting what I considered a paranormal mystery. Well that process went rather smoothly and I was enjoying myself. The story was pouring out of me…I was in my flow. Once I got finished plotting the story I realized one thing….it wasn’t your typical mystery. ha! It was more of what you would call a “supernatural suspense”. I’m not sure if you are on the BookBub list but they have a supernatural suspense category for the books they recommend and quite a few of the books that fall into that category was plotted out similar to what I had done. There was a good story line with mystery, suspense, and paranormal elements. And that’s what my story was.
So then I was like ok, this isn’t a traditional mystery with all your sleuthing and suspects and clues and red herrings….so I must need to read more mystery novels so I can do it the RIGHT way ha! Fast forward to last week lol still have not plotted anything new…..have been reading more novels and coming up with tons of ideas for mystery series etc……even invested in help from plotters to create plot outlines for some of the story ideas. But when the time came to actually come up with the story, the key ingredients to a great mystery novel…..my mind went blank. I couldn’t even come up with one motive for this person to kill this other person and I couldn’t come up with any suspects and their motive. So I was stuck like chuck.
And I came to the conclusion that although I love a good mystery movie and novel….I’m not a traditional mystery writer. I need to focus on what I really love and that’s the supernatural. I love reading books about psychics, and ghosts, and paranormal activity that can’t be explained. I love watching movies & tv shows about it as well. So once I decided that I wouldn’t focus on creating a traditional mystery novel and focus on creating supernatural fiction…my wheels started turning!!
I also realized that I like psychological suspense/thriller novels and movies as well. And if they have a supernatural element to them, ALL THE BETTER….The 6th Sense and The Others instantly comes to mind when I think of that genre. SOOOO ha! I told myself, Yogi, why don’t you just focus on writing supernatural fiction with elements of mystery and suspense. As soon as I told myself that….the next day I came up with 3 solid story ideas in 3 hours! I was really excited! I took the pressure off myself to create something just because I liked it and knew that it’s selling in the marketplace like hot cakes. I was trying to force a square peg into a circle.
I need to play to my strengths and right now it’s creating supernatural worlds. I don’t do vamps and werewolves, although I watch those movies….but I like more superhuman abilities and powers, and ghosts, and possessions 🙂 So I’m on that path now. Supernatural fiction with mystery and suspense elements. 🙂
I created a publishing plan for the next year. Aug 2016- Aug 2017.
I am going to publish 3 more titles under my name and then I’m going to start publishing under my new pen name. I’m starting with a novella (20K) just to get back into writing. The goal isn’t to make money with this title….the goal is to simply get back into writing since I haven’t written anything new in over a year. I already have it plotted out. It’s a romance with a little mystery in it.
Then I have a novel and a duology to write. They are connected by location and a few characters. Both are romance with mystery elements. One is completely plotted out (it was done about 2 years ago just never sat down to write it….I told you I had planned to go the mystery route a couple of years ago lol) the other one was thought of around the same time but it’s not as fleshed out yet as the duology. I will start on these 3 projects this week.
My goal is to write 100K words this year. And have something publishable by Feb 2017.
After I complete these 3 projects, I will work on 2 interconnected series. Then we will go from there 🙂
Til next time,
